Parents File Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against OpenAI After Teen’s Suicide

The parents of 16-year-old Adam Raine have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming that prolonged interactions with ChatGPT contributed to their son’s suicide. According to a report by The New York Times, Adam frequently turned to ChatGPT for months while planning to take his life.

AI chatbots are generally designed with safety systems to intervene if a user expresses intent to harm themselves. While ChatGPT often urged Adam to reach out for professional help or call a hotline, he was able to bypass these safeguards by framing his questions as part of a fictional writing project.

OpenAI has publicly acknowledged the limits of current safeguards. In a recent blog post, the company stated: “We feel a deep responsibility to help those who need it most, and we are continuously improving how our models respond in sensitive interactions.” The post also noted that protections tend to work better in short conversations, but “can sometimes be less reliable in longer, more complex exchanges.”

This case is not isolated to OpenAI. Other chatbot makers, including Character.AI, have also faced lawsuits tied to similar tragedies, while researchers continue to document risks such as AI-related delusions and the difficulty of reliably catching them with today’s safeguards.
