Apple is reportedly planning to launch AirPods with integrated cameras by 2027, according to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg. This innovative product aims to offer the advantages of smart glasses but without the need for lenses or bulky frames. In addition, Apple is expected to release smart glasses in the same year to compete with the Ray-Ban Meta glasses, further enhancing the user experience.
The goal is to expand Apple’s augmented reality (AR) product line, which currently includes the Apple Vision Pro headset. By integrating visual intelligence technology from the Vision Pro into other devices, Apple aims to maximize the return on its significant investment in AR development.
AirPods with cameras do not require smart glasses.
While specific details about the extra features that the integrated cameras on Apple’s AirPods might offer are still unclear, it appears the goal is to replace smart glasses and enhance the user experience with “visual intelligence,” as noted by Gurman.
The idea is to bring augmented reality to more devices, allowing the AirPods to potentially scan the user’s surroundings and provide useful data. This could open up exciting new applications, such as real-time information overlays or contextual insights based on the user’s environment.
Smart glasses to compete with Ray-Ban Meta
Apple’s upcoming smart glasses are set to be a unique take on augmented reality, aiming to rival the Ray-Ban Meta with some notable enhancements. Similar to its competitor, Apple’s model will feature integrated cameras, microphones, and speakers. However, the primary focus will be on creating a superior user experience through advanced visual intelligence capabilities.
This feature will enable users to search for objects in their surroundings using images, akin to what Google Lens offers. According to insiders, Apple is leveraging the visual technologies developed for the Apple Vision Pro, which have required substantial investment, to enhance this new product.
The smart glasses are positioned to compete directly with Meta, which recently introduced the Quest 3S headset, priced at $299. Meta also unveiled Orion—glasses equipped with a microLED screen designed for augmented reality that resembles conventional eyewear, though they remain in the development stage despite their advanced AR features.
