Capcom announced that Resident Evil Requiem has sold 5 million copies worldwide within just five days of its launch. The survival horror title debuted on February 27 and quickly gained momentum thanks to strong reviews from critics and enthusiastic reception from players.

The game currently holds the distinction of being the highest-rated release of the year so far on Metacritic, reinforcing its strong start in both commercial and critical terms.

Celebrating 30 Years of Resident Evil

Resident Evil Requiem arrives during a milestone year for the franchise. The series began in 1996 on the PlayStation, introducing a new style of survival horror that would go on to influence the entire genre.

Now marking the 30th anniversary of the franchise, Requiem serves as the ninth main instalment in the long-running saga.

One of the key highlights of the new game is its narrative connections to Resident Evil Outbreak, while also bringing back one of the series’ most recognisable characters, Leon S. Kennedy.

Potential Franchise Record for Launch Sales

According to analysis from Polygon, Resident Evil Requiem may have reached the five-million mark faster than any previous entry in the franchise.

The closest comparison comes from Resident Evil 6, which reported 4.5 million units at launch. However, those figures included copies shipped to retailers rather than confirmed player purchases, a common practice during the era when physical distribution dominated the market.

Modern sales tracking now reflects digital purchases more accurately, making Requiem’s milestone even more significant.

For comparison, the critically acclaimed Resident Evil 2 remake sold around 3 million copies in its first week after release.

Strong Performance on PC and Steam

The title has also set new engagement records for the franchise on SteamValve Corporation’s digital gaming platform.

On launch day, Resident Evil Requiem reached a peak of approximately 344,000 simultaneous players, the highest number ever recorded for a Resident Evil game on Steam.

Data estimates from SteamDB suggest that around 2 million copies of the game were sold on PC alone during the early days of release.

Available Across Multiple Platforms

Resident Evil Requiem launched simultaneously across several modern gaming systems, including:

  • PC
  • PlayStation 5
  • Xbox Series X and Series S
  • Nintendo Switch 2

The multi-platform release helped broaden the game’s reach and contributed to its rapid sales momentum.

A Franchise With Massive Global Reach

The Resident Evil series remains one of Capcom’s most successful properties. Since its debut three decades ago, the franchise has sold more than 188 million copies worldwide.

The brand’s continued popularity is supported by frequent new releases, remakes of classic titles, and expansions into films, animated projects, and other media.

Resident Evil Requiem’s success reflects a broader resurgence for Capcom, which has spent the past decade rebuilding its reputation with critically acclaimed titles.

The company continues to expand its portfolio with major upcoming projects, including Pragmata and Monster Hunter Stories 3, both expected to strengthen its lineup in the coming years.
