Call of Duty: Black Ops is a popular sub-series within the larger Call of Duty franchise, known for its focus on clandestine operations, psychological narratives, and Cold War-era settings. The first game, released in 2010, is set in the 1960s and follows CIA operative Alex Mason.

The story is told through his interrogations as he struggles with memory loss and brainwashing while recounting missions in locations like Cuba, Vietnam, and Soviet gulags.

The plot centres on a conspiracy to unleash a chemical weapon called Nova 6 on the United States, driven by the antagonist Major General Nikita Dragovich. The Black Ops series is also famous for popularising the round-based Zombies co-op mode.
