Windows isn’t immune to glitches, and some can be disruptive enough to break normal use—sometimes even causing the infamous blue screen. Others are far less dramatic but still irritating, and one such problem has recently surfaced in Windows 11: the password sign-in option can suddenly become invisible.
The issue was first reported by BleepingComputer, and Microsoft has since confirmed it, providing some early details about what’s happening.
Microsoft explains the Windows 11 login bug
When a PC boots into Windows 11, the system loads the lock screen where users can sign in using methods like Windows Hello, a PIN, fingerprints, or a traditional password. The bug affects this exact area of the interface.
Microsoft warns that anyone who has installed Windows 11 updates released since August 2025 might encounter a glitch where the password login option disappears from the lock screen, even though the button itself still works—it’s just visually missing.
The issue seems to appear only on machines with multiple sign-in options configured. If the computer has only a password set up, Windows automatically displays that field. But when several methods are enabled, the password icon may fail to display after installing update KB5064081 (August 2025).
In its support notes, Microsoft explains that hovering your mouse over the spot where the password icon should be will make it appear, allowing access despite the visual bug.
No permanent fix yet
Currently, Microsoft hasn’t released an official patch or workaround beyond this temporary method. The company says it is still investigating and preparing a long-term solution.
If you’re affected by this issue, the only option for now is to hover your cursor over the missing icon until it shows up—while waiting for Microsoft to roll out a proper fix in a future update.
