Microsoft Offers Free Windows 10 Extended Support with Conditions

It’s been quite a while since Microsoft introduced Windows 11 back in October 2021. As the next step in the evolution of its operating system, it was clear that Windows 11 would eventually take the place of Windows 10. Users were well aware that it was only a matter of time before Microsoft pulled the plug on support for the older system.

That day is approaching: Microsoft has officially set October 14, 2025, as the end-of-support date for Windows 10. With that deadline in place, users were expected to upgrade to Windows 11 to continue receiving security updates and technical support.

Still, not everyone has made the switch. Many users remain loyal to Windows 10, preferring its familiar layout and stable performance. For those people, there’s some good news.

Microsoft recently announced that Windows 10 support will be extended beyond the original cutoff — and at no cost — provided certain conditions are met.

Windows 10 users will be able to enjoy free expanded support if they meet the conditions

With the end of Windows 10 support originally scheduled for October 14, 2025, Microsoft had been nudging users to make the switch to Windows 11. The move would cut off security patches and feature updates for Windows 10, leaving systems potentially exposed to emerging threats online.

But now, there’s a shift in that plan.

Microsoft has announced it will extend support for Windows 10 until October 13, 2026, offering users a little more breathing room—if certain criteria are met.

The news, reported by Windows Latest, outlines how users can take advantage of this extension. To keep receiving updates:

  • You can link a Microsoft account to your Windows 10 device — this option is free.
  • Alternatively, users with a local account can pay a $30 fee or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points to access extended support.

Those who choose not to meet any of these requirements will stop receiving updates after October 2025, which could leave them vulnerable to security threats and compatibility issues.

Microsoft understands not everyone is ready—or able—to upgrade to Windows 11 just yet. Hardware limitations and user preference play a big role, and this move reflects an effort to support those still relying on Windows 10.

Starting July 2025, Microsoft will begin showing a pop-up notification on Windows 10 devices, explaining the available options for extending support. Through this prompt, users will be able to either:

  • Pay the $30 fee,
  • Use reward points,
  • Or connect their PC to a Microsoft account and sync settings to the cloud.

Once the support extension is activated, security and feature updates will resume from August 2025.

Although Windows 11 adoption continues to grow, it’s clear that a significant number of people are still holding onto Windows 10 — and Microsoft is giving them a little more time before finally closing the chapter.
