OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is set to receive an investment of up to $100 billion (around R$534 billion) from Nvidia, according to an announcement made by the CEOs of both companies on Monday (22) in an interview with CNBC.
The funding cements OpenAI and Nvidia as leading forces in the artificial intelligence market. Executives explained that the investment will primarily be used to expand OpenAI’s data centers, which power ChatGPT—currently the world’s most widely used AI chatbot with nearly 700 million weekly users.
A significant portion of the funds will go toward ramping up energy capacity by 10 gigawatts, an amount comparable to the electricity needed to power the entire city of New York, home to about 8.5 million residents.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang described the initiative as a “giant project,” while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized its importance for the company’s future:
“There are three things that OpenAI has to do well. We have to conduct world-class AI research, build products people love to use, and solve this unprecedented infrastructure challenge,” said Altman.
The news had an immediate impact on the market, with Nvidia shares closing nearly 4% higher. The company is currently the most valuable in the world, with a market capitalization of $4.47 trillion. Huang himself is now ranked the 8th richest person globally by Forbes, with a personal fortune estimated at $159 billion.
Nvidia’s Unstoppable Growth
This massive investment follows another major move by Nvidia just days earlier. On Thursday (18), the company announced it would spend $5 billion acquiring common shares of Intel as part of a strategic collaboration.
The partnership aims to jointly develop integrated CPUs and GPUs, with wide-ranging implications for both data centers and consumer PCs—further underscoring Nvidia’s relentless push to shape the future of AI.
