One of the most celebrated RPGs of the decade might soon find its way to Nintendo’s next console. According to a trusted industry insider, Baldur’s Gate 3 could be in development for the Switch 2, though confirmation is still pending.
The rumour stems from well-known leaker NateTheHate2, who responded to a question on X (formerly Twitter) about the possibility of Baldur’s Gate 3 arriving on Nintendo’s upcoming hardware.
“Have heard something on [Baldur’s Gate 3] for [Switch 2] but need more verification on it before I can share,” he wrote. NateTheHate2 has a solid track record, having accurately predicted multiple Nintendo Direct and PlayStation State of Play events in the past.
Why a Switch 2 Version Makes Sense
Just a month ago, Larian released a native Steam Deck version of Baldur’s Gate 3, highlighting that the update led to “overall improvements to the way game models are streamed on all platforms.” This optimisation for a portable device like the Steam Deck could lay the groundwork for a smooth transition to the rumoured Switch 2 hardware.
Currently, Baldur’s Gate 3 is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Bringing the title to a new Nintendo system could further expand its already massive audience—especially if the Switch 2 delivers the technical capabilities rumoured to be on par with current-gen consoles.
Technical Challenges Could Return
That said, porting Baldur’s Gate 3 to new hardware isn’t without complications. Larian faced significant hurdles when developing the Xbox Series S version, which launched months after the PS5 and PC editions. The biggest obstacle was implementing split-screen co-op, a feature that pushed the limits of the smaller console’s hardware.
If similar limitations exist on the Switch 2, Larian may need to rethink how multiplayer features are handled—or offer platform-specific adjustments to maintain performance and stability.
Baldur’s Gate 3’s Continued Success
Baldur’s Gate 3 recently celebrated its second anniversary in August, with Larian sharing community stats and fun player trends. For example, only about 2% of players have managed to defeat 20 enemies while drunk. The game continues to receive updates, quality-of-life improvements, and new content, maintaining its strong player base across all platforms.
The RPG was also crowned Game of the Year 2023 by GameSpot and earned widespread critical acclaim for its storytelling, freedom of choice, and character depth.
If the reports turn out to be true, Baldur’s Gate 3 could soon be joining the Switch 2’s launch lineup—or at least its early release window—bringing one of gaming’s modern masterpieces to a whole new audience.
