At Build 2025, Microsoft unveiled a new feature for Windows 11 called Cross-Device Resume, aimed at creating a more seamless experience between PCs and Android phones. Inspired by Apple’s Handoff, this tool lets users pick up where they left off in supported apps, whether switching from phone to PC or vice versa.
What Is a Cross-Device Resume?
Cross-Device Resume is designed to help developers build applications that transition smoothly between devices. For instance, if a user is listening to music on Spotify on their phone, they can open the same app on their Windows 11 PC and continue from the exact spot they left off.
Microsoft demonstrated this with a preview showing Spotify appearing in the Windows 11 taskbar, accompanied by a phone icon. Clicking it launches the app on the desktop right where it was paused on the mobile. WhatsApp is also confirmed to support the feature.
A screenshot shared by tech enthusiast @xenopanther on February 9 shows system settings options like “Turn resume on or off for Spotify” and “Turn resume on or off for WhatsApp,” confirming user-level control over this feature.

Why This Matters
Until now, fluid transitions between apps on different platforms have largely been limited to Apple’s tightly integrated ecosystem. With Cross-Device Resume, Microsoft is offering something similar—but for users who operate across Windows and Android, two ecosystems traditionally seen as separate.
This move allows Microsoft to strengthen its cross-platform strategy despite not having a mobile OS of its own. Developers are encouraged to adopt the new functionality to enhance their apps’ user experience and visibility within Windows.
When Is It Coming?
While Microsoft has showcased the feature, no official release date has been announced. Still, it’s expected to roll out in upcoming Windows 11 updates. It’s clear Microsoft remains committed to improving Windows 11, not just through AI, but also through thoughtful integration that enhances everyday workflows.
