Microsoft has released an urgent update to resolve a widespread issue in Windows 11 that prevented users from accessing key services despite having an active internet connection.

The problem emerged following the rollout of cumulative update KB5079473, leaving thousands of users unable to sign into their Microsoft accounts and access essential applications.

False “No Internet” Error Disrupts Workflows

Affected systems displayed misleading messages indicating a lack of internet connectivity, even though browsing and other online functions were working normally.

According to findings reported by Bleeping Computer, the issue stemmed from a failure in the Microsoft account authentication system, which blocked proper credential verification.

As a result, users were locked out of several widely used services, including:

  • Microsoft Teams (free version)
  • OneDrive
  • Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot

The disruption affected both communication and productivity tools, effectively halting normal workflows for many users.

Bug Linked to Patch Tuesday Update

Technical analysis indicates the issue was introduced with the latest Patch Tuesday release, KB5079473. The update appears to have created an internal conflict that prevented Windows from validating account credentials.

Despite stable network connections, the system behaved as though it was offline, leading users to attempt unnecessary troubleshooting steps such as restarting devices, resetting routers, and rechecking network settings.

Microsoft Responds With Out-of-Band Update

In response, Microsoft issued an out-of-band update, KB5085516, specifically designed to address the authentication failure.

Out-of-band patches are typically reserved for critical issues requiring immediate attention outside the standard update cycle.

The company confirmed that the new update:

  • Restores proper Microsoft account sign-in functionality
  • Resolves the false connectivity error
  • Includes previously released security fixes to maintain system protection

Microsoft has advised users running Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2 to manually install the update via Windows Update to ensure the fix is applied without delay.

Broader Stability Concerns Continue

The authentication issue is the latest in a series of post-update complications affecting Windows 11 in recent weeks.

Other reported problems include:

  • Bluetooth visibility and connectivity issues
  • Network management inconsistencies
  • Compatibility problems on certain Samsung laptops linked to system integration features

In some cases, Microsoft has provided targeted guidance or additional patches to address these concerns.
