Nintendo Reportedly Bans Switch 2 User Over Controversial Username

By Aayush

A Reddit user has sparked discussion after claiming that Nintendo permanently banned their Switch 2 console due to a username change made by a family member.

User Funae24 posted a warning: “Be careful with usernames on the Switch 2.” In the post, they explained that they often share the console with their family, and one day, their sister decided to change her profile name to “Twink Link”—a playful reference to the iconic Zelda character.

The result? A full ban from Nintendo’s online services on that specific system. “I’m completely locked out of everything,” they shared.

The name itself stirred debate in the comments. Some pointed out that “twink” is a slang term within the LGBTQ+ community, and while it may not be offensive on its own, Nintendo’s automated moderation system may have flagged it due to its sensitive nature.

Others were critical of Nintendo’s approach, allowing users to input certain names without warning, only to issue permanent bans afterward. “Why not just block the name in the first place if it’s not allowed?” asked one commenter.

In a follow-up, Funae24 said Nintendo support told them the ban is irreversible. Their only option is to return the console and recover saved data through their cloud backups.

Understandably, the situation has been frustrating for the family, especially as they were looking forward to playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild together.

Nintendo strongly against piracy at Nintendo Switch 2

While it’s hard to confirm the full accuracy of Funae24’s report, there’s no doubt that Nintendo has already started cracking down on certain users, particularly those attempting to bypass system protections.

A growing number of players have reported losing access to Nintendo’s online services after trying to use flashcards like Mig Switch, a tool often associated with running unauthorized software. These bans appear to be part of a broader effort by Nintendo to prevent piracy on the Switch 2, much like the company did with the original console.

Beyond piracy, another long-standing issue from the first Switch seems to be reappearing: the dreaded Joy-Con drift. This defect, where analog sticks register movement even when untouched, frustrated players for years and seems to have made its way into the new generation of hardware, much to the disappointment of fans hoping for a fix.

As the Switch 2 continues to roll out, these early signs show Nintendo is maintaining a strict stance on system integrity while still facing old hardware challenges.
