This September, Sony quietly rolled out a new revision of the PlayStation 5 Slim in Europe. While the console still carries the same price tag, the updated model trims down storage from 1TB to 825GB, a change many players won’t find appealing.
The adjustments don’t stop there. Tech creator Austin Evans shared a breakdown on YouTube, highlighting what’s different in this updated digital-only version.
What’s Changed in the New PS5 Slim
- Design tweaks: The CFI-2100 model now has a more matte, textured finish compared to the glossy look of the earlier Slim.
- Weight reduction: Sony shaved off about 120 grams, making the console a little lighter.
- Cooling system fix: Perhaps the most important improvement—grooves have been added around the liquid metal cooling system. Earlier versions had a flaw that could cause leaks when the console was placed vertically, leading to damage over time.
Despite the reduced storage, the new Slim brings better energy efficiency and improved thermal performance, which may help with long-term reliability. For now, this revision is limited to Europe, with no word on releases in other markets like Brazil.
What About the PS5 Pro?
Alongside the Slim update, rumors suggest Sony is preparing a PS5 Pro revision (CFI-7121), expected to be revealed on September 30. Unlike the Slim’s update, the Pro revision reportedly won’t involve cuts to storage or pricing. Instead, the changes are believed to focus mainly on power consumption and efficiency.
Details remain scarce, but with launch day approaching, we should know more very soon.
