Valve has pushed out its September 2025 Steam client update, delivering a round of upgrades across the in-game overlay, desktop mode, library, Big Picture, and even the store.
The overlay now runs more efficiently on games built with modern graphics APIs, including Vulkan, DirectX 12, and OpenGL’s shader pipeline. A new metric has also been added—CPU temperature tracking—available on both Windows and Linux. Windows users, however, will need a kernel-mode driver turned on for the feature to work.
Other fixes include:
- More accurate FPS reporting in DLSS-enabled titles
- Sharper font rendering at higher DPI scaling
Desktop Mode & Accessibility
A new settings menu has landed in desktop mode, giving players extra control over:
- High Contrast mode
- Motion reduction
- UI scaling options
Valve has also reworked several interface components to better support screen readers, improving accessibility overall.
Library & Big Picture
- Library: Players can now swap in custom artwork for games and even rename titles, making organization easier.
- Big Picture: Fixes include avatars properly displaying while offline and smoother scrolling within game detail pages.
Notifications & Store Updates
Notifications will now spell out which alerts will still trigger toasts or sounds, even when global toasts are disabled. On the storefront side, layouts are wider and roomier, with the main column now stretching to 1200px for large-display users.
macOS Support Changes
Valve has also issued a heads-up: Steam will drop support for macOS 11 (Big Sur) on October 15, 2025.
