AMD has confirmed the existence of its next-generation desktop processor families, providing the first official indication that the company is preparing new chips based on its upcoming Zen 6 architecture.
The company has listed Olympic Ridge and Medusa on its technical information portal. The appearance of the names comes as the industry awaits the successor to the Ryzen 9000 series, which launched two years ago.
AMD has yet to announce a consumer launch date, but current reports point to a release window sometime between 2026 and 2027.
Olympic Ridge and Medusa appear in AMD documentation
The most notable detail in AMD’s documentation is the appearance of the Olympic Ridge and Medusa families.
Olympic Ridge is expected to represent AMD’s next major desktop CPU platform, potentially becoming the basis for the company’s next-generation Ryzen processors. Medusa is more intriguing because the documentation also references Medusa1 and Medusa2, which appear to be versions designed for the existing AM5 platform.
That could mean AMD plans to extend AM5’s lifespan with another generation of processors, potentially including APUs. The last desktop APUs released by AMD were the Ryzen 8000G chips, making the Medusa references particularly interesting for users hoping to continue using existing AM5 systems.
AMD has not yet disclosed the specifications of its Zen 6 processors, but leaks suggest the company could make substantial changes to its chiplet design.
One of the biggest rumoured upgrades is a potential increase in core counts. Reports have pointed to up to 24 cores for the most powerful Olympic Ridge desktop processor. That would represent a significant increase over the current Ryzen desktop lineup, which tops out at 16 cores on mainstream consumer models.
A higher core count could give AMD additional headroom in heavily threaded workloads such as content creation, software development and professional applications.
Gaming could benefit from improved latency
Raw core count may not be the biggest change for gamers.
Zen 6 is also rumored to introduce improvements to how the architecture handles latency, instructions and workload prioritization. These changes could help AMD deliver more consistent performance in CPU-heavy games.
For players, the potential benefit would be stronger minimum frame rates, particularly the 1% and 0.1% lows that can have a major impact on perceived smoothness.
Rather than simply increasing average FPS, improvements in these areas could help reduce sudden drops and frame-time inconsistencies in competitive games and other CPU-intensive titles.
AMD has not confirmed these gaming improvements, so the final performance characteristics will depend on the company’s eventual Zen 6 specifications and implementation.
Medusa could target laptops and AM5 desktops
The Medusa family could have a broader role within AMD’s processor lineup.
While Olympic Ridge is expected to concentrate on high-performance desktop processors, Medusa is reportedly being developed with efficiency and mobile computing in mind.
Zen 6-based mobile chips could feature improved power and thermal management, potentially allowing laptops to deliver longer battery life while maintaining strong performance.
The appearance of AM5-compatible Medusa variants also raises the possibility that AMD will offer new processors to existing desktop users without requiring a move to an entirely new socket.
