AMD Radeon GPUs Are Finally Getting Better HDMI 2.1 Support on Linux

AMD is preparing a significant upgrade to HDMI 2.1 support for Radeon graphics cards running Linux, with several important display features heading to the AMDGPU driver.

The latest AMDGPU feature pull for Linux 7.4 adds support for HDMI FreeSync, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate and Auto Low Latency Mode. Another key change is the planned default enablement of Fixed Rate Link, commonly known as FRL, which is an important part of the HDMI 2.1 specification.

The changes could make Radeon GPUs considerably more capable when connected to modern high-refresh-rate TVs and monitors under Linux.

A Long-Running Problem for Radeon Users

HDMI 2.1 support has been an ongoing pain point for Linux users with AMD graphics hardware. While Radeon GPUs have supported many of the necessary display technologies on the hardware side, bringing the full feature set together in the open-source AMDGPU stack has taken considerable time.

The upcoming changes target several of the features that users increasingly expect from HDMI 2.1 displays.

HDMI VRR can synchronize the display’s refresh rate with the GPU’s output, helping reduce tearing and improving smoothness during gaming. FreeSync builds on AMD’s adaptive-sync technology, while Auto Low Latency Mode can automatically switch compatible displays to a lower-latency gaming mode when appropriate.

FRL Could Be the Biggest Change

The move to enable Fixed Rate Link by default is particularly important.

FRL is used by HDMI 2.1 to provide substantially higher bandwidth than the older TMDS signalling method associated with earlier HDMI generations. That additional bandwidth is necessary for demanding combinations of high resolution, high refresh rates and advanced display formats.

Making FRL available by default should therefore reduce one of the barriers preventing Radeon users from taking full advantage of HDMI 2.1 displays on Linux.

The work is still part of the development process, so the final implementation and availability can change before it reaches stable Linux releases. However, the latest AMDGPU updates indicate that AMD is continuing to close the gap between its Linux and Windows display support.

For Radeon owners who use HDMI 2.1 televisions or monitors, these changes could make Linux a much more practical platform for high-end gaming and modern display setups.
