Microsoft has been steadily expanding the capabilities of Copilot, its AI assistant integrated across its products and services. Beyond the features already available in the stable version, new details have emerged from Windows insiders about an exciting development.

The company is testing a feature called “Copilot Portraits”. This addition aims to make interactions with Copilot feel more natural and human by giving the AI a digital face or avatar, allowing users to converse with it in a more personal way.

Currently, this feature is in the experimental phase, so it’s not yet fully polished. According to Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft’s AI CEO, the idea came from user feedback indicating that people feel more comfortable speaking to a face when using voice commands.

At this stage, it’s not entirely clear how these “portraits” differ from the previously announced animated avatars. It appears that the portraits may be a simpler, 2D version, whereas the full avatar provides a more complex, three-dimensional interaction. Both are currently exclusive to Copilot Labs for testing purposes.

Suleyman also emphasized that this experiment is a way for Microsoft to understand how people respond to interacting with AI in a more human-like manner. Insights from this testing could shape the future of AI-user interaction.

Providing a visual face for Copilot—whether via a 2D portrait or a 3D avatar—represents Microsoft’s ongoing effort to make AI interactions feel more personal and engaging.

It’s worth noting that most features in Copilot Labs are available only to Copilot Pro subscribers, which costs around $20 per month. Along with Copilot Portraits, subscribers also get access to tools that convert 2D images to 3D objects and the Copilot Vision feature.

Currently, Copilot Portraits are being rolled out gradually. Even if you’re a Copilot Pro subscriber, the feature might not appear immediately.
