Microsoft has restored normal operations across its software distribution services after a power failure at a key data center caused widespread disruption for Windows 11 users.
The outage, which lasted several hours, prevented many users from completing system updates or downloading applications from the Microsoft Store, triggering a wave of complaints across social media and user forums.
Power failure disrupted core services
In an official statement, Microsoft confirmed that the incident was caused by an unexpected power outage at one of its primary data centers. The loss of power affected backend systems responsible for processing update requests and app downloads, resulting in timeouts, failed installations and repeated connection errors.
During the disruption, users attempting to install new software or apply Windows updates reported that processes stalled or failed entirely.
Gradual recovery after electricity restored
Although electrical service was restored shortly after the initial outage, Microsoft said full service recovery took longer due to the complexity of its infrastructure. Storage systems and servers were brought back online through a staged restart process to ensure data integrity and platform stability.
The company confirmed that both Windows Update and the Microsoft Store have now returned to normal performance, allowing users to resume downloads and system maintenance without interruption.
Normal operations resumed
According to Microsoft, support teams worked to restore full reliability across affected services, and the platform is now fully operational worldwide. Users can once again access system updates, install applications and use cloud-backed features without errors.
The incident highlights the dependence of large-scale cloud services on physical infrastructure such as power and cooling systems. Even with redundancy and backup measures, localized facility failures can temporarily affect global users.
With systems stabilized, Microsoft said the issue has been fully resolved and no ongoing impact is expected for the Windows 11 user base.
