AMD and OpenAI today announced a landmark multi-year, multi-generation agreement to deploy 6 gigawatts of AMD Instinct™ GPUs, marking one of the largest AI compute partnerships ever signed.
The deal will see OpenAI deploy AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs as part of its next-generation AI infrastructure, with the first 1-gigawatt rollout set to begin in the second half of 2026.
This collaboration strengthens AMD’s position as a key player in the global AI race and reinforces OpenAI’s strategy to expand its compute capacity to train and deploy increasingly sophisticated generative models.
Under the agreement, AMD becomes a core strategic compute partner for OpenAI. The companies will co-develop large-scale rack-level AI systems and optimise hardware–software integration across multiple generations of AMD Instinct GPUs — from the MI450 series to future architectures.
The partnership builds on a collaboration that began with the MI300X and MI350X platforms. Through shared engineering and roadmap alignment, AMD and OpenAI aim to advance performance, efficiency, and scalability for next-generation AI workloads.
Financial and Strategic Alignment
As part of the agreement, AMD has issued OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock, tied to specific deployment and performance milestones.
- The first tranche will vest upon completion of the initial 1-gigawatt deployment.
- Subsequent tranches will vest as deployments scale to 6 gigawatts and as both companies meet technical and commercial goals.
AMD estimates that the partnership could generate “tens of billions of dollars” in revenue over its lifetime and be highly accretive to its non-GAAP earnings per share.
