Rockstar Games has officially confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will not arrive in May 2026 as previously expected. The studio announced via social media that the game will now release on Thursday, November 19, 2026, saying the extra months are needed to ensure the game meets their standards of quality and polish.
“Grand Theft Auto VI will now release on Thursday, November 19, 2026. We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve,” Rockstar said in its official statement.
While the delay may disappoint fans, few will be surprised. Rockstar’s unusually quiet marketing over the past few months hinted that a postponement was likely.

Normally, a major release only six months away would be accompanied by a surge of trailers, interviews, and media previews. In GTA 6’s case, there’s been virtually none of that activity — a clear sign that the game wasn’t ready to hit its original launch window.
Another Delay in a Familiar Pattern
This marks the second major delay for Grand Theft Auto 6, continuing a pattern that has long been associated with Rockstar’s biggest titles. Both the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption series have undergone multiple release date changes before finally shipping.
To be fair, the delays usually pay off. Rockstar’s open-world games are renowned for their scale and complexity, often pushing the limits of current hardware. Developing such intricate systems — from AI behaviour to seamless city simulations — takes time, testing, and polish.
Still, fans might want to temper expectations. Even with a new date set for November 2026, it wouldn’t be out of character for Rockstar to shift the timeline again if needed. As always, with Rockstar, the only certainty is that perfection takes time.
