Rumor Mill: AMD May Be Cooking Up an AI-Ready Ryzen Z2 Chip

By Aayush

Nobody asked, but it looks like AMD could be gearing up to launch a new version of its Ryzen Z2 processor that supports AI capabilities. According to recent leaks, at least one variant of the chip may come equipped with an NPU (Neural Processing Unit), which would enable on-device AI tasks in notebooks and compact PCs.

The tip comes from a known tech insider, “Anhphuh”, who claims AMD is preparing to unveil a model called the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme. Another variant reportedly in the pipeline is the Ryzen Z2 “a”—though there’s some debate on whether that was a typo for “AI” or if the naming reflects a different usage or product tier. (Let’s be honest, we’ve all missed a keystroke before.)

These rumored chips would be released alongside AMD’s already announced Ryzen Z2, Z2 Extreme, and Z2 GO. Of those, the Z2 GO is expected to target entry-level handheld consoles, aiming to balance affordability and performance for running demanding games at lower settings.

Worth noting: AMD’s recent Hawk Point and Strix Point APUs already include NPUs, especially in laptop chips released in 2024. That makes the idea of an AI-focused Ryzen Z2 variant quite believable—particularly in the context of the booming handheld gaming market, where performance and smart computing features are starting to merge.

AMD Ryzen Z2 With Artificial Intelligence

While artificial intelligence in gaming continues to stir debate among players, it wouldn’t be surprising to see AMD lean into AI-powered features for its Ryzen Z2 processors, especially in the handheld console market. In fact, this could be a logical next step, especially given that current portable devices still lack advanced upscaling tech, something that FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) could potentially solve if paired with AI support.

That said, AMD isn’t blazing this trail alone. MSI has already jumped into the ring with its MSI Claw 8 AI+, a handheld console powered by Intel chips and AI capabilities designed to improve gaming performance and system efficiency. So while the idea of AI-enhanced portable gaming may still be gaining traction, the competition is already heating up—and AMD looks ready to take part.
