Sony and AMD Extend Partnership to Bring FSR 4 to PS5 Pro by 2026

While AMD has already confirmed its continued partnership with Xbox for the next generation of consoles, it’s also working closely with Microsoft’s biggest rival in gaming—Sony. In a recent social media post, Jack Huynh, head of AMD’s Radeon GPU division, shared a photo alongside PlayStation’s lead system architect, Mark Cerny. According to Huynh, the two met to discuss upcoming innovations for the PlayStation platform, specifically around AI-powered enhancements for the PS5 Pro.

At the center of their collaboration is the AMHYSST project, which focuses on integrating machine learning and neural network technologies to boost gaming experiences. Huynh emphasized that this initiative isn’t just a concept, calling it a “cooperative reality.” He highlighted AMD’s FSR 4 (FidelityFX Super Resolution)—launched earlier this year alongside the RDNA 4 GPUs—as a key part of what’s coming to the PlayStation ecosystem.

Mark Cerny also hinted at these developments in a recent interview with Tom’s Guide, suggesting that advanced AI features are indeed on the horizon for PS5 Pro gamers.

FSR 4 will arrive at PS5 Pro in 2026

PlayStation’s lead architect, Mark Cerny, has emphasized that the benefits of Sony’s ongoing collaboration with AMD aren’t just limited to one console. “This isn’t proprietary tech. The goal here is to move the entire industry forward,” Cerny said in a recent statement. He revealed that AMD’s upcoming GPU architecture—possibly called UDNA—is already in Sony’s hands as part of development for the next-generation PlayStation hardware.

“Large parts of RDNA 5, or whatever the name given by AMD, are coming out of the engineering I am doing in the project. And once again, this is the result of the attempt to make things advance. There are no restrictions on how to use any of this. AMD is moving with extreme rapid. What I’m trying to do is prepare for the next generation of consoles, so my deadline is for several years.”

One of the biggest takeaways from this partnership is the confirmed integration of FSR 4 (FidelityFX Super Resolution 4) into the PlayStation 5 Pro, expected in 2026. Unlike past efforts, this won’t be a scaled-back version—FSR 4 is set to replace the current PSSR tech with a more advanced upscaling solution, designed to deliver sharper visuals and better performance across upcoming titles.
