Spotify has started rolling out a new feature called User Notes, allowing listeners to add personalized comments to individual songs within playlists. The update gives users a new way to share the stories, memories, and reasons behind their music selections.

The feature brings a social and personal element to playlists by letting creators attach notes directly to specific tracks, similar to the handwritten messages once found in cassette tape liner notes.

How User Notes Works

Users can add a note to any song in a playlist they have created or can edit. To use the feature, they need to open the playlist, tap the three-dot menu next to a track, and select the “Add note” option.

The written note appears beneath the song title and can include personal memories, recommendations, or an explanation of why the track was included in the playlist.

Anyone with access to the playlist can view the notes. Each comment also displays the name of its author, which links directly to the user’s Spotify profile.

A Long-Requested Feature

The introduction of User Notes addresses one of the platform’s longest-standing community requests. Spotify users had repeatedly asked for the ability to comment on individual songs through the company’s Community Idea Exchange.

Previously, playlist creators could only add context through the playlist description, making it difficult to explain the significance of specific tracks.

The new feature offers a more organized way to share stories and personal connections with individual songs without relying on a single description for the entire playlist.

Available for Free and Premium Users

Spotify is rolling out User Notes to both Free and Premium subscribers on Android and iPhone devices.

The release is being introduced gradually and is currently available only in selected markets. Spotify has not yet announced the complete list of supported countries or a timeline for a wider global rollout.

To use the feature, users must be at least 16 years old.

With User Notes, Spotify adds another social feature to its streaming platform, giving users more ways to personalize playlists and share the stories behind the music they love.
