The Ubuntu 25.10 Beta is now available! Released this Friday (19), the new version of Canonical’s Linux distribution focuses on tighter security, visual refinements, and updated default applications.
As usual, the beta is part of Ubuntu’s six-month release cycle, with final versions arriving every April and October. This edition is especially timely, landing just as Windows 10 approaches its end of support, making Ubuntu 25.10 a strong alternative for PCs that can’t upgrade to Windows 11.
Stronger Security by Default
One of the biggest highlights is a push for enhanced system protection. Ubuntu 25.10 introduces:
- TPM chip integration for improved disk encryption, with recovery keys accessible via the Security Center.
- A streamlined process for enabling encryption during installation.
- A Rust-based version of the “sudo” command, the tool that grants admin privileges for installing apps or making system changes—designed to minimize vulnerabilities.
Under the hood, Ubuntu 25.10 runs on the Linux Kernel 6.17, with out-of-the-box support for the latest NVIDIA graphics drivers.
Although this release is incremental, there are some welcome updates:
- Loupe, a new default image viewer.
- Ptyxis, a modern terminal app.
- GNOME 49, delivering smoother animations and HDR improvements.
- Updated icons and interface tweaks thanks to a refresh of the Yaru theme.
There’s also a revamped “Open in Terminal” shortcut and behind-the-scenes optimizations for better performance and reliability.
