Warner Bros. has officially confirmed the production of Mortal Kombat 3, even before the release of its predecessor. The announcement came via screenwriter Jeremy Slater during his appearance at New York Comic-Con 2025 (NYCC).
“Our friends at New Line and Warner Bros. are so happy with this film. They were so excited, and convinced that there is a huge fan base waiting for it, that they hired me to start writing the next project,” Slater revealed.
High Confidence in the Franchise
The confirmation of Mortal Kombat 3 before Mortal Kombat 2 has even hit theatres demonstrates Warner Bros.’ strong confidence in the franchise. The second film, originally scheduled for 2025, has been postponed to May 15, 2026 — notably just 11 days before the release of GTA 6.
At NYCC, director Simon McQuoid explained that the date change reflects the filmmakers’ ambition to deliver exceptional quality:
“The more people saw this movie, the more traction it gained. We created a massive summer blockbuster. We should be proud of the fact that Mortal Kombat, as a film and franchise, is going to break out next year. Yes, we have to wait, but it will be huge. That’s why,” said McQuoid.
