Xbox’s experimental disc-to-digital program is expanding, with SEGA apparently becoming the latest publisher to support the feature.
The program has been available to Xbox Insiders for roughly a month, and its growing publisher support suggests Microsoft is continuing to refine the system before a broader rollout. Ubisoft previously joined the initiative, while SEGA games are now beginning to appear among the supported titles.
Xbox Makes Disc-to-Digital Easier to Use
The concept behind the program is straightforward.
Owners of participating physical games can insert a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and obtain a digital license for the title. Once the entitlement has been registered, the game can be played without keeping the disc in the drive.
For supported Xbox Play Anywhere titles, the digital license can also provide access on other compatible platforms. Cloud gaming support can further expand where eligible games can be played.
Microsoft has now made the process more streamlined.
Previously, players had to manually complete an additional step through the console’s menu after inserting a supported disc. The digital entitlement is now granted automatically when the disc is recognized.
The interface has also been simplified. Players will see a full-screen explanation the first time they claim a digital entitlement. After that, subsequent claims are accompanied by a smaller notification rather than another full-screen message.
SEGA Games Are Starting to Appear
The biggest development may be the apparent arrival of SEGA titles.
Players have spotted games such as Persona 5 Royal becoming eligible for digital entitlement. If the apparent SEGA expansion covers the publisher’s broader catalog, around 44 additional games could eventually become part of the program.
That would give Xbox owners even more reasons to revisit physical games they already own.
The Program Now Covers 1,585 Games
According to community tracking, the disc-to-digital program currently includes 1,585 games, while another 205 titles remain outside the service.
Those figures are particularly notable because the feature is still being tested.
The catalog could continue expanding as Microsoft brings additional publishers into the program. Ubisoft and SEGA have already increased the scope, while other major publishers have yet to participate.
Bandai Namco and Square Enix are among the companies currently absent from the program.
Xbox Is Building a Bigger Digital Library From Physical Games
The disc-to-digital initiative gives Xbox owners a way to preserve the value of physical games while gaining the convenience of digital licenses.
Instead of needing the original disc every time a supported game is launched, players can claim an entitlement and access the title digitally. For games included in Xbox Play Anywhere or cloud gaming, that entitlement can potentially extend beyond the console itself.
The program remains limited to participating publishers and games, so owning a physical Xbox disc does not automatically guarantee eligibility.
Still, with the supported catalog already reaching more than 1,500 titles and additional publishers joining the test, Microsoft’s experiment is becoming increasingly significant for Xbox’s physical and digital ecosystems.
