According to The Information, Apple has decided to delay the launch of the iPhone Air 2 while it works on a significant redesign aimed at making the device “more appealing to consumers.” Sources suggest the revamp could include a dual-camera system, marking a notable upgrade for the lightweight iPhone line.

Some Apple engineers reportedly hope to release this redesigned iPhone Air 2 in spring 2027, alongside the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e. However, insiders caution that it’s “still too early to tell” whether that timeframe is realistic.

iPhone Air 2: Off the Schedule for Now

The Information reports that Apple has recently informed both engineers and suppliers that the next-generation iPhone Air has been removed from the production schedule, without offering a new release date. Three people close to the project confirmed the decision.

Originally, the iPhone Air 2 was expected to launch next fall alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Fold. Apple’s original plans called for a device lighter than the current iPhone Air, featuring a larger battery and adopting the vapor chamber cooling system that debuted on the iPhone 17 Pro. Early supply chain leaks also pointed to a possible dual-camera setup.

Production Scaled Back Amid Lower Demand

While Apple has not officially cancelled the iPhone Air 2, development has slowed significantly. Foxconn has reportedly shut down nearly all of its iPhone Air production lines, with only one and a half remaining in operation—and those are expected to cease by the end of November. Meanwhile, Apple’s other partner, Luxshare, ceased production of the iPhone Air in late October.

The decision appears to stem from slower-than-expected sales of the first-generation iPhone Air. According to The Information, such a move—pulling a model entirely off the production roadmap—is “rare, if not unprecedented,” for Apple.

What’s Next for Apple’s 2026 and 2027 Lineups

With this delay, Apple’s fall 2026 lineup is now expected to include three flagship devices: the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the long-awaited iPhone Fold. The standard iPhone 18 and budget-oriented iPhone 18e are reportedly planned for release in spring 2027.

Despite the uncertainty, there remains hope for fans of the Air line. Sources suggest the delay may lead to a more refined and feature-rich iPhone Air 2, potentially debuting alongside the mainline iPhone models in 2027.
