Google to Drop Chrome Support for Android 8 and 9 This August

By Aayush

Google has officially announced it will stop updating Chrome for smartphones and tablets running Android 8 (Oreo) and Android 9 (Pie). The change, shared on the company’s support forum this Monday (23), marks the end of support for these older Android versions.

Devices still using Android 8 or 9 — first released back in 2017 and 2018 — will no longer receive updates after Chrome version 138. Starting with Chrome 139, scheduled to launch on August 5, the browser will only run on devices running Android 10 or newer.

While Chrome will still function on older systems, users stuck on Oreo or Pie won’t receive any future updates, including important security fixes or performance improvements.

Google’s move mainly affects aging devices that haven’t received software upgrades in recent years. Phones and tablets running Android 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, or newer won’t be affected and will continue to receive full browser support.

It’s worth noting that continuing to use outdated versions of Chrome could increase your device’s exposure to security risks over time, especially as newer vulnerabilities go unpatched.

If your device is still running Android 8 or 9, it might be time to consider an upgrade — either to a newer phone or, if possible, a newer version of Android — to keep your apps secure and up to date.

What to do not lose Chrome updates?

To continue receiving the latest features and security patches in Chrome, Google advises users to upgrade to a newer version of Android.

You can check for available updates by heading to your phone’s Settings and looking for System Updates. If no updates are available — which is often the case for older devices — the only option may be to switch to a more current model that supports newer Android versions.
