Halo Studios has been hit by Microsoft’s latest round of Xbox layoffs, and one developer says the timing of his dismissal was especially brutal. Cinematic Director Josh Daniels revealed that he had been promoted shortly before being told his position was being eliminated.
Daniels shared the news on LinkedIn following Microsoft’s latest restructuring of its gaming business, describing the experience as being promoted and laid off within the same week.
“I’m one of the many hit by the Halo Studios layoffs,” Daniels wrote. He added that he would be taking some time away before beginning his search for new opportunities in cinematic direction and production.
Halo Studios Is Being Restructured
Microsoft announced another round of Xbox layoffs on September 22 as part of what Xbox executive Matt Booty described as an ongoing corporate “reset.”
More than 250 employees were reportedly affected by the latest cuts, following a much larger wave of layoffs in July.
The changes also involve the Halo franchise itself. Microsoft is moving Halo’s leadership under Activision, while Halo Studios, the team formerly known as 343 Industries, is being restructured into a support-focused organization.
The move represents another major change for the studio that has overseen the Halo franchise for years.
Promotion Followed by Layoff
Against that backdrop, Daniels’ experience has drawn attention because of how quickly his employment situation changed.
The cinematic director said he had received a promotion shortly before the layoffs were announced.
“Promoted and laid off in the same week is pretty wild,” Daniels wrote.
He also used the post to begin looking for his next position, saying he was interested in Cinematic Direction and Production roles and inviting potential employers to contact him.
Daniels is one of many developers affected by Microsoft’s latest cuts, but his situation illustrates the uncertainty facing employees as Xbox continues to reorganize its studios and franchises.
More Xbox Layoffs Hit Developers Working on Major Games
The latest Halo Studios cuts come shortly after another Xbox-related layoff involving the upcoming Gears of War: E-Day.
A developer working on the game was reportedly laid off only days after publicly celebrating the project reaching a major development milestone.
That sequence of events has added to concerns among developers about the unpredictable nature of Microsoft’s recent restructuring.
Xbox has undergone several rounds of layoffs and organisational changes over the past year, affecting teams working across some of the company’s biggest franchises.
For developers, the latest changes demonstrate that even reaching major milestones or receiving a promotion may not provide much job security while Microsoft’s gaming division continues to reshape its structure.
