Bungie is changing course on its plans for Destiny 2, confirming that previously vaulted campaigns, destinations and raids will eventually return to the game.

The announcement gives the long-running shooter another lease on life after Bungie previously indicated that its June update would be the final major update for Destiny 2. The studio has now made it clear that it is not ready to walk away from the franchise.

Bungie Admits It Lost Sight of Destiny Players

In a new update published on September 21, 2026, Bungie leadership, Poria and Josh, addressed the game’s future in a five-minute video and an accompanying blog post.

The developers acknowledged that Bungie had “lost sight” of its players over the past several years and said the studio needs to rebuild trust through both its games and the decisions surrounding them.

One of the biggest steps will be bringing back parts of Destiny 2 that players can no longer access.

“We are not done with Destiny,” Bungie said, reinforcing the franchise’s importance to the company’s future.

Vaulted Destiny 2 Content Is Coming Back

The return of vaulted content will include campaigns, destinations and raids that were previously removed from Destiny 2.

However, Bungie says the process will be far more complicated than simply restoring old files.

The game has undergone significant technical changes since the launch of Beyond Light, meaning older content needs to be updated to work with modern systems. Bungie says this includes major work involving lighting, combat and other underlying gameplay technologies.

The studio did not provide a specific release date for the returning content, but confirmed that it will eventually be made available to all Destiny 2 players.

Marathon Is Also Getting a Major Direction Change

Bungie also addressed the reception of Marathon, acknowledging criticism surrounding the extraction shooter following its launch, as well as its low player numbers.

Rather than abandoning the project, the studio says it plans to expand the game’s scope beyond the traditional extraction shooter formula.

Bungie wants Marathon to become a deeper survival experience while maintaining the elements that make the game distinctive. The studio says players will eventually have more ways to explore and survive its alien setting.

For now, however, the Marathon team remains focused on upcoming content, including the October Nightfall Refresh and the Symbiosis update planned for December.

What Happened to Destiny 3?

Bungie’s renewed commitment to Destiny 2 comes after a period of uncertainty surrounding the franchise.

In May, the studio announced that its June 9 update would be the final update for Destiny 2. Layoffs subsequently affected members of the development team, leaving players concerned about the future of the franchise.

The community responded by pushing for a new installment. A Destiny 3 petition reportedly surpassed 300,000 signatures, while fans repeatedly posted “We Want Destiny 3” messages during PlayStation’s State of Play broadcasts.

Bungie has not announced Destiny 3, however, and the studio’s latest statement does not confirm that a new mainline sequel is in development.
