Phison is pushing back against a forged document that has been making the rounds among customers, less than a day after addressing reports of storage problems linked to Windows 11.
Earlier this week, Microsoft’s latest security updates for Windows 11 were reported to cause failures in some solid-state drives, particularly after heavy file transfers. While Phison-based NAND controllers are among those potentially affected, the company emphasized that its hardware is not uniquely impacted, countering claims made in some outlets.
In a statement to Tom’s Hardware, Phison confirmed it is investigating the situation but warned that a counterfeit document—allegedly from inside the company—has been circulated. The company stated:
“We wish to state unequivocally that the document in question is neither an official nor unofficial communication from Phison.”
The forged file, titled “Phison SSD Controller Issues Summary”, includes a list of controller models it claims are affected by the update. Phison has dismissed the contents as entirely false and said it is taking legal steps to address the matter.
The company reiterated that its only formal statement remains the one issued on August 19. In that release,
Phison acknowledged the wider industry impact of Microsoft’s “KB5063878” and “KB5062660” updates, noting that several storage devices—not just those using its controllers—may be affected. The company stressed it is working closely with partners to review the situation, provide support, and implement any necessary fixes.
Phison added that it remains committed to ensuring product reliability and assisting both partners and end users as investigations continue.
