Apple’s iPhone 20, expected to launch in 2027, could introduce a truly borderless display for the first time. Recent leaks suggest that the company is preparing to use a new technique known as four-sided folding, which would eliminate visible bezels entirely by wrapping the screen around all four edges.
The report comes from Dealsite, which claims that LG Display plans to invest approximately $300 million (around R$1.65 billion) to make the production of these advanced panels possible. The device is expected to mark 20 years since the original iPhone debuted in 2007, and according to a senior analyst at Omdia, Apple may skip the “iPhone 19” name altogether and jump straight to iPhone 20 to emphasise the milestone.
Curved corners and a new screen structure
Unlike current iPhones, the iPhone 20’s display is expected to curve at all four corners, not just along the sides. Achieving this design requires bending the panel’s circuitry around the frame, a far more complex process than what today’s flat or slightly curved screens use.
To make this possible, the Thin-Film Encapsulation (TFE) layer—which protects the OLED panel from moisture—must be made thinner without sacrificing durability. This layer is essential for long-term reliability, making the engineering challenge even greater.
Apple’s vision of a fully “all-screen” iPhone will only be complete once the front camera, Face ID sensors, and other components are placed entirely under the display. That step remains one of the biggest technical hurdles for both Apple and its suppliers.
Under-display Face ID may arrive earlier
Before reaching that final goal, Apple is expected to take a gradual approach. Leaks suggest that iPhone 18 and the rumored iPhone Fold could serve as testing grounds for under-display Face ID.
In early implementations, Apple may still rely on a small cutout for the selfie camera while hiding other sensors beneath the screen. This phased rollout would give Apple time to refine the technology ahead of the iPhone 20’s debut.
LG ramps up production for Apple
To support Apple’s plans, LG Display is reportedly preparing major changes to its manufacturing operations. Sources indicate the company may dedicate around 10 production lines exclusively to Apple’s next-generation displays.
Dealsite reports that LG is considering an investment of 400 billion won , one of its largest recent commitments to display technology. Due to the complexity involved, entirely new facilities may be required to handle the mass production of these futuristic panels.
Expected launch in 2027
Apple is expected to officially unveil the iPhone 20 in the third quarter of 2027, aligning with the 20th anniversary of the original iPhone, which launched in June 2007.
Pricing details remain unknown, but the cutting-edge display technology and high manufacturing costs suggest the anniversary model could carry a significantly higher price tag than current iPhones. Limited availability is also possible at launch, given the difficulty of producing the new screens at scale.
