A leaked internal Xbox roadmap has revealed several features Microsoft is reportedly preparing over the next two years, including a long-rumored system that converts physical game discs into digital licenses and plans to expand Xbox 360 game support on PC.
The information was shared by industry insider extas1s and later corroborated by multiple gaming publications, including The Verge. The roadmap outlines features expected to arrive through 2028, although Microsoft has not officially confirmed the leaked details.
Disc-to-Digital Conversion Expected This Month
According to the leaked roadmap, Microsoft is preparing to introduce a feature that allows owners of physical Xbox games to obtain a digital license linked to their account.
Under the proposed system, players would insert an Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc into their console to activate a digital entitlement for that title. The digital version would remain available only while the user retains ownership of the original physical disc.
If the game is sold or traded, the digital license would automatically transfer to the new owner’s account when the disc is registered, preventing multiple users from claiming permanent ownership from a single copy.
The roadmap indicates Microsoft originally planned to release the feature through the Xbox Insider testing program in July before expanding it to Xbox One and Xbox Series X users in August.
Microsoft has yet to announce the feature publicly, but speculation suggests it could unveil the system during Gamescom 2026, where Xbox is expected to host its largest exhibition at the annual gaming event.
Last year’s Gamescom presentation included the announcement of the ROG Xbox Ally release date, making this year’s event a likely venue for new hardware and software announcements.
Feature Raises Questions About Xbox’s Future Hardware
The leaked plans have also fueled speculation about Microsoft’s next-generation console, currently codenamed Xbox Helix.
Some industry observers believe the disc-to-digital conversion system could serve as a transition toward future Xbox hardware without an integrated disc drive. Such a move would mirror the gaming industry’s increasing shift toward digital distribution.
The speculation comes as Sony continues with its previously announced plan to discontinue physical media for new PlayStation releases beginning in 2028, a decision that has generated significant debate among players and game preservation advocates.
Xbox 360 Games Could Be Headed to PC
The leaked roadmap also suggests Microsoft is working to bring Xbox 360 games to Windows PCs.
Although specific technical details were not included, the initiative appears to align with Microsoft’s broader strategy of integrating the Xbox and Windows ecosystems. Earlier reports this year indicated that the company was exploring new methods to make Xbox 360 titles playable on PC rather than relying solely on traditional emulation.
If implemented, the feature could strengthen compatibility between future Xbox hardware and Windows devices while expanding access to Microsoft’s legacy game library.
Microsoft has not commented on the authenticity of the leaked roadmap. If the plans remain on schedule, the company could formally introduce the new features during Gamescom later this month.
