Microsoft has started testing a free, ad-supported version of Xbox Cloud Gaming, giving select users access to cloud-based game streaming without requiring a paid subscription.
The new service entered testing on Thursday and is currently available only to members of the Xbox Insider program. Microsoft has not announced when the feature will be expanded to all Xbox users.
Under the new model, players will be able to stream supported games from Microsoft’s cloud gaming service on compatible devices at no additional cost.
The company said the feature is designed to make cloud gaming more accessible, allowing users to play on devices such as smartphones, tablets, smart TVs and Xbox One consoles without purchasing new hardware capable of running the latest games locally.
However, the free tier includes several limitations.
According to Microsoft, advertisements will appear only before a gaming session begins, and gameplay itself will remain uninterrupted once the session starts.
Players using the free service will also be limited to one-hour gaming sessions, after which a new session must be started.
Availability will vary depending on both device compatibility and regional support.
Limited Game Selection
Microsoft has not released a list of titles available through the free cloud gaming tier.
The company indicated that only selected games from its cloud gaming library will be supported during the testing phase, suggesting that the initial catalog may be smaller than the full Xbox Cloud Gaming library available through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
Optional Alternative to Game Pass
Microsoft emphasised that the ad-supported service is entirely optional and will not replace existing subscription offerings.
Players who subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will continue to access Xbox Cloud Gaming without advertisements under the current subscription model.
The company said the new option is intended to provide another way for players to experience Xbox games without paying a monthly subscription fee.
Microsoft Defends Use of Advertising
In announcing the trial, Microsoft said advertising has long been part of the gaming industry, appearing in various forms ranging from in-game product placements to free-to-play business models.
The company argued that, when implemented thoughtfully, advertising can help lower the cost of access for players while allowing more people to experience games through cloud streaming.
Microsoft believes the approach could broaden the audience for Xbox Cloud Gaming by providing a free entry point for users who may not be ready to subscribe.
For now, the feature remains exclusive to Xbox Insiders as Microsoft gathers feedback before a wider rollout.
The company has not confirmed when the ad-supported cloud gaming tier will become available to the general public or whether additional games will be added before the service launches more broadly.
The trial represents Microsoft’s latest effort to expand access to Xbox gaming by combining cloud technology with new pricing models, offering players another way to play games across multiple devices without dedicated gaming hardware.
