OpenAI confirmed on Monday, April 13, that it has acquired Hiro Finance, a startup focused on artificial intelligence-driven personal financial planning. The deal marks the company’s second acquisition in less than two weeks, following its earlier purchase of TBPN, a daily tech podcast.

Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. The announcement was initially shared by Hiro founder Ethan Bloch on LinkedIn, and later confirmed by OpenAI to TechCrunch.

Startup to Shut Down Following Acquisition

Founded in 2024, Hiro launched its AI-powered financial planning tool just five months ago. The platform allowed users to input details such as income, debts, and monthly expenses, generating simulations to guide financial decision-making.

Following the acquisition, Hiro will discontinue its services on April 20. Users will have until May 13 to export their data before it is permanently deleted from the company’s servers. According to Bloch, the startup’s team, which includes around ten members, will join OpenAI.

Focus Shifts Toward AI-Driven Financial Guidance

The acquisition signals OpenAI’s growing interest in expanding its AI applications into personal finance. Bloch suggested that the startup’s expertise could help enhance financial guidance within ChatGPT.

In his announcement, Bloch noted that personalised financial advice has historically been costly or inaccessible, adding that AI tools are beginning to change that landscape.

Industry observers suggest the move may also help OpenAI engage users of automated trading platforms such as OpenClaw, a segment often associated with competing AI systems like Claude.

The Hiro deal follows OpenAI’s recent acquisition of TBPN, reflecting a broader expansion strategy into areas beyond its traditional focus. While the company has recently concentrated on developer tools and competition in the AI programming space, these latest purchases point to growing ambitions in media and financial technology.

OpenAI has not yet clarified whether it plans to launch a standalone financial planning product or integrate Hiro’s capabilities directly into ChatGPT.
