Sony has introduced a one-per-order limit on the PS5 Disc Drive through PlayStation Direct, as demand for the accessory increases following the company’s decision to stop producing new physical PlayStation game discs from January 2028.
Customers shopping through PlayStation Direct can currently purchase only one PS5 Disc Drive per order. The store also warns that additional household purchase restrictions may apply.
Sony has not explained how long the restriction will remain in place or whether it plans to increase production of the accessory to meet the surge in demand.
The purchase limit comes shortly after Sony announced that it plans to end production of new physical PlayStation game discs beginning in January 2028.
The announcement has prompted some PlayStation users to secure a Disc Drive while the accessory remains available. The drive is particularly important for owners of the PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro, which do not include an optical drive.
Players who own physical game collections can use the detachable drive to continue accessing those discs on compatible consoles.
Collectors and Existing Owners Drive Interest
The recent surge in demand comes from several groups.
Owners of digital-only PS5 models are looking to ensure they can continue playing their existing physical libraries. Collectors are also purchasing drives as a precaution, while some buyers are concerned that resellers could acquire large quantities and sell them at inflated prices.
Limiting purchases to one unit per order could help Sony distribute available stock among more customers.
Sony has used similar purchase restrictions for highly sought-after PlayStation products in the past. However, the current limit is notable because it follows the company’s decision to move away from physical game production.
Sony has not confirmed whether it will increase production of the PS5 Disc Drive in response to the latest demand.
The company also has not clarified whether the accessory will continue to be manufactured after physical PlayStation games cease production in 2028. That leaves existing PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro owners uncertain about long-term availability.
For players who prefer physical games, the Disc Drive remains the primary way to use their existing collections on compatible digital PS5 models.
The purchase restriction is currently in effect on PlayStation Direct, but Sony has not announced whether similar limits will be introduced through other retailers.
