The latest Steam hardware survey points to a shift in how gamers are equipping their PCs, especially when it comes to memory. For years, 16 GB of RAM has been the standard for most players, but more users are now upgrading to 32 GB to secure smoother performance and future-proof their systems.
In August, PCs with 16 GB of RAM saw a slight decline of 0.4%, while those with 32 GB rose significantly by 1.31%. Despite this change, 16 GB still holds the top spot with 41.88%, but 32 GB isn’t far behind at 36.46%. At its current growth rate, 32 GB could overtake 16 GB as the new baseline for Steam gamers by early 2026.
Most Popular Resolutions, CPUs, and GPUs on Steam
Screen Resolutions
Full HD (1920 x 1080) continues to be the go-to resolution for most Steam users, holding a share of 54.44%. However, it’s no longer the fastest-growing option. Higher resolutions are gaining traction, with 2560 x 1600 climbing past 5% and 1440p securing second place at 20.19%. While Full HD is still expanding, its growth rate has slowed to under 0.10%.
Processors
On the CPU side, six-core models remain the most common, now accounting for 29.81% of users, helped in large part by AMD’s Ryzen 5 lineup. Still, the biggest surge comes from ten-core processors, which gained 0.64%, largely thanks to Intel’s mid-range chips like the i5-14400F and i5-12600K. Intel as a whole has regained some ground, edging up by 0.24%, and now sits at 59.76% market share, compared to AMD’s 40.16%.
Graphics Cards
When it comes to gaming performance, the graphics card is king. The RTX 4060 desktop version now leads the pack on Steam’s survey, overtaking the mobile edition that had been popular for months. Interestingly, the RTX 3060 is still adding users, though at a slower pace than the 4060.
Meanwhile, the latest RTX 50 series has already made its mark. The RTX 5060 grabbed 1% share in just three months, while the RTX 5070 sits higher with 1.57%. Across the lineup, all RTX 50 models now appear in Steam’s database. On the other hand, AMD’s new Radeon RX 9000 series has yet to show up in the survey results.
