WhatsApp is preparing a new feature that will allow users to create and reserve unique usernames on the platform, according to information shared by WABetaInfo.
In the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android, references were found to a new option called “Reserve Username”. While details remain scarce, it appears the feature will let users secure their preferred nickname before the feature officially launches. It’s not yet clear how the reservation process will work or who will be eligible to participate.
WhatsApp typically rolls out new features gradually, meaning they first reach a small number of users before wider distribution. The reservation system could help manage competition for popular usernames, ensuring a fairer rollout once the feature goes live.
What to Expect from WhatsApp Usernames
The Meta-owned messaging app is developing the username feature as an alternative to using phone numbers for contact identification. This would mark a significant privacy improvement, allowing users to find and connect with others without sharing their personal numbers.
The feature has reportedly been in development since 2023, though it’s still not available even in the beta program. However, recent findings suggest that WhatsApp may be moving closer to public testing.
To enhance security, Meta is also said to be working on a numeric PIN system that would verify or authorise the first chat when contacting someone via their username. This extra step could reduce spam and unwanted messages.
