Apple has expanded the capabilities of Apple CarPlay by enabling support for third-party AI assistants, allowing users to interact with ChatGPT while driving through voice commands.
The feature arrives with the rollout of iOS 26.4, released on March 24, marking a significant step in integrating conversational AI into in-car systems.
With iOS 26.4, Apple introduced a new CarPlay entitlement category designed specifically for voice-driven conversational apps. This framework allows approved AI services to operate within CarPlay, opening the door for alternatives to Apple’s built-in assistant, Siri.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT is among the first applications to adopt this new capability, following Apple’s approval process for integration into the CarPlay ecosystem.
Voice-Only Experience Focused on Safety
Unlike its full-featured versions on mobile and web, ChatGPT on CarPlay is intentionally limited. Apple has restricted the experience to voice-only interactions, preventing visual distractions while driving.
Users will not see generated text, images, or complex interfaces on the dashboard display. Instead, communication happens entirely through spoken input and responses.
To maintain safety standards, Apple enforces strict interface rules:
- Apps can only use three predefined screen templates
- No layered menus or complex navigation flows are allowed
- Interactions must remain task-oriented and predictable
These constraints are designed to minimize driver distraction and ensure that AI tools do not interfere with road awareness.
Task-Focused AI Assistance
ChatGPT’s role within CarPlay is not intended for open-ended conversations. Instead, it functions as a task-driven assistant, helping users perform quick queries or actions while keeping interactions brief and focused.
Apple’s guidelines emphasize that conversational unpredictability—common in AI chat systems—is not suitable for driving environments, reinforcing the need for controlled responses.
Requirements for Users
To access ChatGPT through CarPlay, users must:
- Have an iPhone running iOS 26.4 or later
- Install the latest version of the ChatGPT app
- Use a vehicle compatible with Apple CarPlay
Once set up, users can interact with the AI assistant entirely through voice commands during their drive.
The update reflects Apple’s gradual expansion into AI-powered experiences across its ecosystem. While third-party assistants are now gaining limited access to CarPlay, Apple is also preparing upgrades to its own assistant.
A major Siri update is expected with iOS 27, likely to be unveiled at WWDC 2026, scheduled for June 8.
