Apple has officially announced iOS 27 alongside its new AI-powered version of Siri during WWDC 2026, marking one of the company’s most significant software updates in recent years. The new operating systems entered developer testing immediately after the announcement, with a public beta expected to follow in July.
The final release for consumers is scheduled for the Northern Hemisphere autumn window, typically spanning September to December 2026, aligning with Apple’s traditional iPhone launch cycle.
The announcement was delivered during the opening keynote by Apple CEO Tim Cook. According to reports from the event, the presentation also marked what is expected to be Cook’s final appearance on the WWDC stage, as his retirement is planned for September this year.
Apple did not provide additional details regarding leadership succession during the presentation.
Testing Timeline Across Apple Platforms
Apple confirmed that developer beta versions of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 and visionOS 27 are available immediately. watchOS 27 testing will follow a staggered rollout, with Siri AI integration expected in a later beta release.
A public beta program is scheduled for July, allowing users enrolled in Apple’s testing program to install early versions of the software across supported devices.
Despite the phased rollout, Apple reaffirmed that the final stable release will remain targeted for the end of 2026, with September emerging as the most likely launch period in line with new iPhone introductions.
The company also noted that Siri AI will remain labeled as a beta feature even after the public release, indicating ongoing development beyond launch.
Device Compatibility and AI Limitations
iOS 27 will continue Apple’s strategy of broad device support, maintaining compatibility with all models that previously supported iOS 26. This includes older devices such as the iPhone 11 lineup, first introduced in 2019.
However, advanced Apple Intelligence features, including Siri AI, will require more recent hardware. The AI assistant will be limited to devices equipped with Apple’s latest processing capabilities, specifically the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and the entire iPhone 16 series or newer.
Regional Availability and Restrictions
Apple also confirmed that access to Siri AI will vary by device capability and geographic region.
During the initial rollout, Siri AI will support only English-language commands, limiting its availability to non-English-speaking users at launch.
Regulatory restrictions are also expected to affect distribution. Due to requirements under the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, Siri AI will not be available on iPhones and iPads in EU markets at launch. Users in the region will instead be able to access Apple Intelligence features through macOS 27, visionOS 27 and watchOS 27.
In China, Apple said availability will also be delayed as the company works to meet local regulatory approvals before enabling the AI features.
