Apple is expected to introduce a new entry-level MacBook powered by an iPhone-class processor in the first half of 2026, as the company looks to expand its reach into the budget laptop segment, according to recent industry reports.
In his Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman said the device could become the centerpiece of Apple’s early-year Mac lineup, although he did not specify an exact launch date beyond the first six months of the year.
A different kind of Mac
The rumored model is expected to feature a 13-inch display and run on an iPhone-series chip rather than Apple’s traditional Mac-focused M-series processors. Reports suggest the device could use the A18 Pro, bringing performance levels that may rival or exceed older Apple silicon such as the M1.
If confirmed, the product would mark a significant shift for Apple, introducing a Mac designed around mobile-class silicon to reduce costs and improve power efficiency.
Targeting the budget market
The new machine is expected to serve two strategic purposes. First, it would allow Apple to compete more directly with low-cost Windows laptops and Chromebooks, particularly in education and entry-level consumer markets.
Second, the device could act as a more affordable gateway into the Mac ecosystem for users who have been deterred by Apple’s traditionally premium pricing.
Separate supply-chain reports indicate the laptop could be priced between $699 and $750, positioning it below current MacBook Air models.
Cost-cutting likely
To reach a lower price point, Apple may make several hardware compromises. Industry speculation points to possible reductions such as:
- Fewer USB-C ports
- Base memory limited to 8GB
- A lower-grade display compared with higher-end MacBooks
Shipment forecasts suggest Apple could order between five million and eight million units for 2026, signalling expectations of strong demand if the product launches.
Timing remains uncertain
The potential release window overlaps with Apple’s early-year product cycle, which typically includes Mac updates tied to new macOS versions. However, Gurman did not confirm whether the device will appear at the company’s expected March launch period.
If introduced, the lower-cost MacBook would represent one of Apple’s most aggressive moves into the entry-level computing space—testing whether a more affordable price can expand the Mac’s footprint without diluting the brand’s premium positioning.
