The police in GTA 6 are getting a major upgrade, and escaping a wanted level may not be enough to keep them off your back.
Rockstar North co-director Rob Nelson has revealed that police officers in Grand Theft Auto 6 will have a more persistent memory during and after a chase. Unlike previous games, simply breaking the police’s line of sight will not necessarily make them forget everything about the player.
The details were shared during an interview published on the TGG channel.
GTA 6 Police Will Remember What They Know About You
Rockstar is introducing a new system called Heat that tracks information authorities have gathered about the player during a pursuit.
That information can include several identifying details, such as:
- Whether security cameras have captured the player
- Clothing and appearance
- Physical characteristics
- Weapons being carried
- The vehicle being used
This means losing the wanted level may only be the beginning.
If police have collected enough information about the player, officers could potentially recognise them again and restart the pursuit. Players will therefore need to deal with the evidence they’ve left behind instead of simply driving around the corner and waiting for the wanted stars to disappear.
Nelson explained that Rockstar wanted to move away from the instant reset seen in earlier GTA games, where police could lose the player and seemingly forget about the entire encounter immediately.
The new system is designed to give law enforcement a longer memory and make escaping more involved.
The Minimap Is Changing Too
Rockstar is also changing how players track police during a chase.
The familiar police vision cones that appeared on the minimap in previous games will no longer provide the same information. Instead, GTA 6 introduces a feature called Focus.
Focus allows players to determine where nearby officers are positioned, including their locations through walls. Rather than simply watching small cones move across the radar, players will have to pay closer attention to their surroundings.
The system could make high-level pursuits considerably more unpredictable.
According to Nelson, players will need to think more carefully based on their Wanted Level rather than relying on the traditional strategy of watching the minimap and avoiding police vision cones.
Escaping Police Could Require More Planning
These changes suggest that Rockstar wants police encounters in GTA 6 to feel less like a simple game of hide-and-seek.
Getting out of immediate sight may no longer guarantee safety. If officers have identified enough details about the player, returning to normal activities could still carry a risk of being recognised.
That could also make clothing, vehicles and other choices more meaningful during a police chase, particularly if the Heat system tracks exactly what authorities have seen.
For players accustomed to losing the cops by hiding in an alley for a few seconds, GTA 6 could demand a very different approach.
GTA 6 Was Still Far From Finished When the First Trailer Arrived
The new police details are not the only insight Rockstar has provided into the game’s lengthy development.
In a separate interview with Trois Couleurs, Rockstar North leadership revealed that GTA 6 was nowhere near finished when its first trailer was released in December 2023.
The admission highlights just how much work remained behind the scenes when Rockstar finally showed the world its first look at Vice City and the game’s characters.
With Rockstar continuing to reveal details about its redesigned police systems and other gameplay mechanics, GTA 6 is shaping up to make some of the series’ familiar mechanics considerably more sophisticated.
