RPCS3 Developers Slam DLSS 5 After Leaked DLL Is Tested in the PS3 Emulator

The developers behind the PlayStation 3 emulator RPCS3 have sharply criticised NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 after modders reportedly tested a leaked version of the technology’s DLL with the emulator’s renderer.

In a post on X published Thursday, September 3, the RPCS3 team said it had seen the results produced by the leaked technology and described them in highly negative terms. The developers also criticised what they see as the industry’s growing reliance on upscaling and frame-generation technologies to compensate for poorly optimised games.

The team said it would not add what it called “garbage” technology to RPCS3.

RPCS3 Says DLSS 5 Does Not Fit Its Goals

Responding to users who challenged the criticism, the RPCS3 developers explained that the emulator is not designed to require high-end hardware to make games playable.

The team also pointed to a technical limitation with PS3-era software. Games from that generation generally lack the motion-vector information required by modern temporal upscaling technologies.

That makes technologies such as DLSS 5 unsuitable for the emulator’s rendering pipeline, according to the developers.

Modern temporal upscalers rely on information from previous frames, including motion vectors, to reconstruct a higher-resolution image. Without the necessary data from the original game, implementing such techniques becomes considerably more complicated.

Why RPCS3 Still Uses FSR 1

The developers also faced criticism over RPCS3’s existing use of AMD’s FSR 1, with some users arguing that the emulator’s position against modern upscaling technologies was inconsistent.

RPCS3’s developers rejected that comparison, explaining that FSR 1 works differently from newer temporal upscalers such as FSR 2 and later, NVIDIA’s DLSS technologies and Intel’s XeSS.

FSR 1 is a spatial upscaler, meaning it can process each frame independently without requiring motion vector information from the game. The team described it as essentially the Lanczos scaling algorithm with modifications.

NVIDIA’s comparable spatial technology is Image Scaling, or NIS.

Because of that distinction, RPCS3 intends to continue supporting spatial scaling options. The emulator will retain technologies such as FSR 1 as well as more basic approaches including bilinear filtering.

RPCS3 Supports a Large Portion of the PS3 Library

RPCS3 is one of the most prominent open-source PlayStation 3 emulators and has steadily expanded its compatibility with Sony’s seventh-generation console library.

According to the developers, the emulator can now run more than 77% of the PlayStation 3’s game library. Its compatibility includes major titles such as the God of War games released for the console.

The DLSS 5 controversy therefore appears less about whether RPCS3 will embrace the latest image reconstruction technology and more about whether such techniques fit the emulator’s technical requirements and development philosophy.

For now, the developers have made their position clear: RPCS3 will continue to support spatial upscaling, but users should not expect DLSS 5 to become part of the emulator’s rendering toolkit.
