Microsoft could be considering a major change to its PC gaming strategy by ending future Xbox game releases on Steam and distributing them exclusively through its own PC ecosystem, according to a new industry rumor.

The claim comes from insider Jez Corden, who said he had heard “interesting information” suggesting Microsoft is evaluating such a move. However, he stressed that the company has not confirmed any plans, and the reported strategy remains speculative.

According to Corden, Microsoft is working on a broader strategy to strengthen its presence in the PC gaming market. One possibility under consideration is reducing its reliance on Valve’s Steam platform and encouraging players to purchase Xbox games directly through Microsoft’s own digital ecosystem.

The reported strategy would align with Microsoft’s long-term ambitions to create a more unified Xbox and Windows gaming experience.

Corden also suggested that Microsoft’s next-generation hardware initiative, known internally as Project Helix, forms part of the company’s broader gaming roadmap.

Exclusive Ecosystem Could Return

The rumor further claims Microsoft may place greater emphasis on keeping future first-party titles within its own ecosystem.

If implemented, that approach could explain why some upcoming Xbox releases may not launch simultaneously on competing platforms, including PlayStation 5 and Steam.

Microsoft has not commented on the report, and no official announcement has been made regarding changes to its PC publishing strategy.

Steam Remains the Dominant PC Gaming Platform

Any decision to move away from Steam would represent a significant shift for Xbox’s current publishing model.

Steam remains the largest digital storefront for PC games, with millions of active users worldwide. Previous attempts by major publishers to prioritise their own launchers over Steam have delivered mixed results.

Companies including Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, and Epic Games have all pursued strategies centered on proprietary PC storefronts. While each sought to build its own ecosystem, several publishers later returned to Steam after finding it difficult to match the platform’s reach and established user base.

Because of that history, industry observers have treated the latest rumour with caution. Many believe convincing PC players to abandon Steam would present a considerable challenge, regardless of Microsoft’s broader gaming ambitions.

For now, the reported plans remain unconfirmed, and Microsoft has yet to indicate whether it intends to alter its current approach to releasing Xbox games on PC.
