Back in 2015, when Microsoft introduced Windows 10 with both light and dark themes, it kicked off a long journey toward giving the operating system a more unified look. Progress has often been slow, with details left unfinished for years—but one of those long-standing gaps is finally being addressed.
The Windows 11 File Explorer has supported dark mode for some time, but one part of it always stood out: the file transfer dialog. Whenever you copied or moved files, that pop-up window still used a brighter design, breaking the visual flow.
According to users testing the latest Windows Insider builds, Microsoft is now updating that area. The new design aligns the transfer window with the rest of File Explorer, harmonizing fonts, colors, and contrasts. The result is easier on the eyes in dimly lit environments and finally consistent with the broader dark theme.
While faster SSDs mean file transfer windows don’t stay on screen as long as they used to, the change is still meaningful. It removes one of the last jarring mismatches in Windows’ appearance and makes everyday interactions smoother.
As for timing, it isn’t yet clear whether this update will roll out with Windows 11 version 25H2 or arrive earlier through a cumulative update. Either way, it’s another example of Microsoft tidying up small but noticeable details that make the system feel less like a patchwork of old and new designs.
Nearly a decade after introducing dark mode, Windows is finally rounding out the experience in one of its most basic, everyday tools. It may have taken a while, but users will notice the difference from the very first file they copy.
