NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 Appears in New Driver Files as ‘DLSS-NR,’ Hinting at Neural Rendering Rollout

Fresh evidence suggests NVIDIA has begun laying the groundwork for its next-generation DLSS technology. References discovered in the company’s latest graphics driver point to a feature called “DLSS-NR,” which many in the PC gaming community believe stands for Neural Rendering, a key component of the highly anticipated DLSS 5 suite.

Although NVIDIA has not officially confirmed the connection, the appearance of the new terminology has fueled speculation that DLSS 5 development is progressing ahead of its expected launch later this year.

Users examining the latest NVIDIA driver package uncovered several entries containing the term “DLSS-NR.” Among the discovered references were:

  • Enable DLSS NR Override
  • Enable DLSS NR SL Override
  • Override DLSS NR Presets

The findings have led enthusiasts to conclude that “NR” likely refers to Neural Rendering, the AI-powered rendering approach NVIDIA showcased during its GTC 2026 presentation.

Unlike previous versions of DLSS, which primarily focused on upscaling and frame generation, DLSS 5 is expected to take a much deeper role in image creation by using artificial intelligence to reconstruct and enhance larger portions of a scene.

Override Support Could Expand Compatibility

One of the more notable discoveries is the presence of “Override” options within the driver files.

The Override function already exists in DLSS 4, allowing users to force certain DLSS features through the NVIDIA App even when developers have not implemented them directly in a game.

If the same functionality extends to DLSS 5, users may be able to activate Neural Rendering features in titles without native developer support. Such an approach would significantly broaden compatibility and potentially allow a wider range of games to benefit from NVIDIA’s AI-driven rendering technology.

While NVIDIA has yet to outline how this feature would work in practice, the driver references suggest the company is preparing flexibility similar to that offered by current DLSS tools.

New Direction for Graphics Technology

DLSS 5 has generated considerable debate since its unveiling. During GTC 2026 demonstrations, NVIDIA showcased Neural Rendering running with two GeForce RTX 5090 GPUs, with one handling traditional rendering and the second processing AI-generated visual enhancements.

The demonstration sparked concerns about hardware requirements, but NVIDIA later clarified that consumers will not need dual graphics cards when the technology reaches the market. According to the company, DLSS 5 is being designed to operate on a single GPU configuration.

Despite the technical ambition, reactions from the gaming community have been mixed. Critics argue that Neural Rendering alters game visuals too aggressively and moves too far away from traditional rendering methods. Supporters, including some developers, view the technology as a way to accelerate development and improve graphical quality while reducing workload.

Others within the industry have suggested AI rendering should remain an assistive tool rather than becoming responsible for large portions of a game’s final image.

Launch Expected Later This Year

NVIDIA has previously indicated that DLSS 5 is scheduled to arrive during the second half of the year. While the company has not publicly acknowledged the newly discovered driver references, the appearance of DLSS-NR entries suggests internal implementation is already underway.

As the rollout approaches, the technology is likely to remain one of the most closely watched developments in PC gaming, particularly as NVIDIA seeks to expand the role of artificial intelligence in real-time graphics rendering.
