WhatsApp has unveiled a range of new features designed to enhance the fan experience during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, offering live match updates, football-focused content, and artificial intelligence-powered assistance directly within the messaging platform.
The new features began rolling out globally on June 4 and will be made available to users in phases over the coming weeks. The initiative aims to transform WhatsApp into a central hub for football fans following the tournament, which will feature 48 national teams.
As part of the update, users will be able to access real-time scores, breaking tournament news, team updates and interactive content without leaving the app. The additions are intended to help fans stay connected to the action throughout the competition.
To mark the occasion, WhatsApp has partnered with Adidas to bring official tournament-themed elements into the platform. One of the most notable changes is the replacement of the standard football emoji with the tournament’s official match ball, Trionda. The special emoji also triggers unique visual effects when used in messages and reactions.
Football-themed experiences have also been added to video calls, allowing users to enjoy tournament-inspired visual effects while connecting with friends and family. In addition, WhatsApp has launched a dedicated sticker pack featuring common football moments, including goals, celebrations and referee cards.
The platform is also introducing a football-focused directory within the Channels tab. The section provides access to live scores, match-related news and team information in real time. Updates are integrated with WhatsApp Status, making it easier for users to follow tournament developments. Users will retain control over the content they see and can choose to hide or unfollow specific channels.
Artificial intelligence is also playing a larger role during the tournament. Meta AI, powered by Muse Spark technology, will allow users to quickly access information such as tournament standings, player details and recommendations for nearby venues where matches can be watched.
Despite the addition of new services and interactive features, WhatsApp emphasized that user privacy remains a priority. The company stated that personal messages, calls and group conversations will continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption.
