Sony is expanding the entertainment capabilities of the PlayStation 5 by turning the console into a free live television hub. The company’s new “Live TV on PS5” service is now available to users in the United States, offering more than 100 ad-supported channels without requiring a PlayStation Plus subscription or a separate app download.
The service is powered by Sony Pictures Television and is built directly into the PS5’s Media section. To access it, users can open the Media tab, select “Live TV on PS5,” and sign in with their PlayStation account.
Sony says the channel lineup will continue to expand, with additional channels and themed programming expected to be introduced over time.
What Can You Watch on Live TV on PS5?
The launch lineup covers a broad range of entertainment, including movies, television, anime, sports, news and online content.
Among the available movie channels are Lionsgate’s MovieSphere, Sony One Horror Hits and Cinevault. Viewers can also find television programming featuring shows such as Community, Forensic Files, Hell’s Kitchen, The Walking Dead, Fear Factor and Ice Road Truckers.
Anime fans have access to series including Naruto, Sailor Moon, Hunter x Hunter and Death Note, along with dedicated channels such as Black Clover.
Sports coverage is another major part of the service, with channels including FOX Sports, NASCAR, NBC Sports Now and UFC. News and weather options include NBC News Now, Fox Weather and LiveNOW from FOX.
Sony is also bringing online-focused programming to the platform. The initial lineup includes content such as Hot Ones alongside esports streams.
The Service Is Free, but Supported by Advertising
“Live TV on PS5” does not require a separate paid television subscription or PlayStation Plus membership. Instead, Sony is funding the service through advertising.
The company is positioning the feature as an additional entertainment option for PS5 owners who want access to live programming without subscribing to another service.
The US launch is only the beginning. Sony says the service will next expand to Canada, although the company has not yet confirmed which other regions could receive it.
Bravia TVs Are Next
Sony also plans to bring “Live TV on PS5” to its Bravia televisions later this year. That would extend the service beyond PlayStation hardware and give Sony another way to integrate its free, ad-supported television offering into its broader consumer electronics ecosystem.
For now, Sony has not announced plans to bring the service to the PlayStation 4 or other gaming consoles.
With more than 100 channels available at launch and additional programming planned, Sony is effectively adding a free live-TV platform to the PS5 without requiring users to install another application or pay for PlayStation Plus.
