Samsung is working on a major upgrade to its Quick Share feature as part of the upcoming One UI 9, which will be based on Android 17. The update is expected to introduce a new “Tap to Share” function, allowing users to transfer files simply by bringing two devices close together.
According to a report from 9to5Google, the feature may be officially unveiled during Google I/O 2026, scheduled for May 19 and 20.
File Sharing with a Simple Tap
Early findings suggest that Tap to Share will use proximity-based technology, likely combining NFC and other wireless protocols. In testing, users need to place two unlocked Galaxy smartphones close together, typically with screens facing up and overlapping near the top.
Once aligned, a glow animation appears to confirm the connection, and file transfer begins automatically. If the connection does not establish immediately, users may need to adjust the phones back-to-back to align NFC antennas, which can vary by model.
The feature is expected to support a range of content types, including links, photos, videos, locations, and contact cards.
Not Limited to Galaxy Devices
Although initial leaks point to integration within Samsung’s ecosystem, the broader expectation is that Tap to Share will be part of Android 17 itself. This suggests compatibility with other Android devices beyond Galaxy smartphones.
It remains unclear whether the feature will work with Apple devices. Apple currently offers a similar function called NameDrop, while Samsung has recently improved Quick Share with support for AirDrop compatibility.
Additional Improvements in One UI 9
Beyond file sharing, One UI 9 is expected to include several under-the-hood upgrades. These may include support for the VVC video codec, smoother system animations, and enhanced protections against misuse of accessibility permissions.
Other anticipated additions include Memory Tagging Extension support for improved security, advancements in satellite connectivity, and updates to the Samsung Internet browser.
Internal testing of One UI 9 has already been spotted on the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s firmware, indicating that development is underway.
Based on Samsung’s typical release cycle, Android 17 is likely to see a stable rollout by late June 2026. One UI 9 is expected to follow in September or October, after a beta testing phase in select regions.
In the meantime, Samsung continues to expand One UI 8.5 to older Galaxy devices, while preparing its next generation of software and features for upcoming models.
