Microsoft is gearing up for an exciting year in the world of Windows, especially with the upcoming generation of PCs equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) technology from top original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
In this article, we’ll check the comprehensive roadmap for Windows 11 version 24H2, highlighting the next-gen AI experiences and the Arm PC revolution. These insights are based on notes provided by Zac Bowden in an article for Windows Central.
Roadmap of Windows 11 Version 24H2
RTM (Release To Manufacturers)
Microsoft is laying a strong foundation for the next iteration of Windows 11. While the RTM (Release to Manufacturing) build may not encompass all the final features, version 24H2 marks a significant milestone in the development process. This version will be sent to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to begin their work.
Expected to reach manufacturers in April, the full version of 24H2 will be ready later. Typically, if we purchase a device with Windows 11 24H2 preinstalled, the factory version will be the RTM build.
However, once we set up the device, we can expect to receive a cumulative update that incorporates numerous features and fixes that Microsoft has prepared during the months leading up to the launch.
Two waves of release
The release of the 24H2 version will unfold in two strategic waves:
- First Wave (June): This initial wave targets the new Arm Snapdragon X Series devices. These devices, built on ARM architecture, promise impressive performance and enhanced energy efficiency. Users can expect to harness the power of AI on ultraportable devices, convertibles, and tablets.
- Second Wave (September): The second wave will incorporate all AI features finalized during the summer. This phase is where Windows 11 will fully showcase its potential. In the following section, we will get into some of these critical developments set to roll out in September or October 2024.
New AI Experiences
1. AI Explorer
The “AI Explorer” introduces a groundbreaking capability that transforms your computer activities into searchable memory using natural language. Ever struggled to recall a file you edited months ago? With AI Explorer, there’s no need to fret over where you stored it.
Just ask AI Explorer, and it will display the relevant documents, emails, or photos. This feature has the potential to revolutionize how we navigate and interact with our files and data.
2. Improved Live Captions
Live Captions are set to receive substantial enhancements. They won’t just be confined to live broadcasts or videos; instead, they’ll be accessible for any multimedia content. Whether it’s video calls or podcasts, Live Captions will ensure that information is accessible to everyone, regardless of hearing ability or language.
3. Generative AI in applications
Windows 11 is set to bolster specific applications with AI capabilities. For instance, the Copilot programming tool, already favored by developers, will harness artificial intelligence to offer code suggestions, troubleshoot issues, and enhance productivity. This collaboration between humans and machines promises to be more seamless and efficient.
