YouTube is expanding the social side of its music streaming service with the introduction of “Fan Communities” on YouTube Music for smartphones. The new feature allows listeners to interact in dedicated spaces centered around artists and bands, bringing a forum-style experience to the platform.

The feature works similarly to community forums found on platforms such as Reddit, enabling fans to discuss music, share opinions and engage directly with posts related to their favorite artists. Bands and musicians can also use the space to publish updates, announce releases and share interactive content, including polls and discussion threads.

Users can react to posts, leave comments, and participate in voting activities on community pages.

Although YouTube already offers community-focused features on its main video platform, this marks the first time such an option has been integrated directly into YouTube Music. Competing streaming services, including Spotify, Deezer and Apple’s Apple Music, currently do not provide a similar built-in community system.

How to Access Fan Communities

To find the new feature, users can open an artist or band profile in YouTube Music and look for the section labelled “Connect with other fans” positioned above the song list.

However, YouTube Music notes that the banner may not appear on every artist page, as it can sometimes be replaced by other sections such as release highlights.

Early testing indicates the rollout is still limited. For example, the band Linkin Park already has an active fan community available, while many major artists have yet to receive the feature.

The addition could help strengthen fan engagement on the platform by creating spaces for dedicated fandoms to gather and interact. It also signals YouTube Music’s growing interest in blending music streaming with social networking elements.

YouTube Music remains available as a free service, though some premium features are still reserved for YouTube Premium subscribers.
